Germany gives Socceroos a thrashing PDF   E-mail

Pretoria - Germany became the top goal scorers in their group, after they humiliated Australia 4-nil at their opening Group D match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday evening.

Following their great performance and good results, the Germans are topping Group D with three points and four goals.

On the second spot, is the Black Stars of Ghana who became the first African nation to win their 2010 FIFA World Cup match after they beat Serbia 1-nil at Loftus Versfeld Stadium earlier in the day.

The Socceroos looked dangerous in the early minutes of the match, coming close to scoring just three minutes into the game.

Philipp Lahm had to clear Richard Garcia's shot before it crossed the line three minutes into play.


However, four minutes later, the Australians seemed to have relaxed as they stopped moving forward to attack and resorted to ball watching as well as giving the German strikers scoring opportunities.

Man of the Match, Lukas Podolski, scored the first goal for his side in the 8th minute with a rocket 26 metres from the box.

The Australian goal keeper, Mark Schwarzer tried to palm Podolski's shot over the cross-bar, but it went in.

Miroslav Klose scored the second goal for the three-time World Champions with a beautiful header on the 26th minute after his skipper, Lahm delivered a perfect cross.

When the Mexican referee, Marco Rodriguez, blew his whistle for the half-time break, the Socceroos were trailing 2-nil.

In the second-half, the Aussies tried to attack, but the Germans were too clever as they denied opening up in the middle of the park.

In the 56th minute, Rodriguez sent Tim Cahill to an early shower after a reckless challenge on Bastian Schweinsteiger.


Oezil and Podolski who were giving the Aussies' defence a tough time, attempted to score on several occasions, but they were not lucky.

It was in the 66th minute when Podolski made some brilliant moves before passing the ball to Thomas Mueller, who was also a marvel to watch from outside the box and unleashed a shot to make it 3-nil.

Two minutes later, Cacau who came in for Klose made it 4-nil with a simple finish in the box.

Germany will play against Serbia on 18 June in Nelson Mandela Bay, while Australia will face the powerful Black Stars of Ghana the following day in Rustenburg. -
