Spain crowned World Cup champs

Johannesburg - A late goal by Andres Inestia ensured the first ever World Cup victory for Spain as the La Roja battled it out with the Netherlands in the final of South Africa's first ever FIFA World Cup on Sunday night.

It took an extra 15 minutes for the more than 84 000 spectators at Soccer City stadium to see the only goal of the match as both teams failed to find the back of the net in the normal 90 minutes of play.

After a disappointing goalless first half, the Netherlands looked set to get their opener but despite being one on one with the goalkeeper, striker Arjen Robben failed to convert what was clearly meant to be a goal. Coach Bert van Marwijk stuck to the same tactical line up he used to eliminate the Uruguayans.

England are burnt out - Franz Beckenbauer

"The English look a little tired," Beckenbauer said to a German paper. "There is a good reason for that: the Premier League players have got to play far more games than their Bundesliga colleagues, including two national cup competitions. Therefore, when it comes to a World Cup or a European Championship, they are burnt out."Our players, on the other hand, seem to be in a physically better condition. Of course we respect them, but we certainly don't fear them. England's first two appearances at the World Cup were paltry, but they improved against Slovenia."

USA to face Algeria

Pretoria - The United States national team will face-off against the Algerians this afternoon at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane.

To advance to the next stage of the World Cup, Bob Bradley's players need a win against Algeria who got one point after an entertaining 0-0 draw with group C favourites, England.

The North African team lost its opening match 1-nil to Slovenia.

The USA is in group C along with Algeria, England and Slovenia.

All teams have played two matches with Slovenia topping the group with four points, while both the USA and England have two points. Algeria is at the bottom of the group with one point.

The huge difference of the two teams is that the USA have conceded and scored three goals, while Algeria have not goal.

Germany gives Socceroos a thrashing

Pretoria - Germany became the top goal scorers in their group, after they humiliated Australia 4-nil at their opening Group D match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday evening.

Following their great performance and good results, the Germans are topping Group D with three points and four goals.

On the second spot, is the Black Stars of Ghana who became the first African nation to win their 2010 FIFA World Cup match after they beat Serbia 1-nil at Loftus Versfeld Stadium earlier in the day.

The Socceroos looked dangerous in the early minutes of the match, coming close to scoring just three minutes into the game.

Philipp Lahm had to clear Richard Garcia's shot before it crossed the line three minutes into play.

Fan guide to stadiums

Pretoria - With only three days left to the FIFA World Cup, host cities around the country are gearing to provide efficient transport services to soccer fans attending matches at stadiums and FIFA Fan Fests,

The Local Organising Committee (LOC), together with the host cities has used Bafana Bafana's World Cup preparation matches to test the Park and Ride initiatives ahead of the showpiece.

Major routes to the stadiums, airports and hotels have been expanded; while rail stations such as Nasrec, adjacent to Soccer City, have been refurbished.

Efficient rail services in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany made travel easy for soccer fans to and from stadiums.

Here is a quick guide on how you can get to stadiums:

Mangaung celebrates 30 Days to World Cup

Mangaung- The Mangaung Local Municipality celebrated 30 Days to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in style on Tuesday.

The celebrations were a way to instil, ignite and embrace patriotism and to encourage communities to support Bafana Bafana during the month-long tournament.

Zakumi, the official World Cup mascot, bike rides, a Siwelele band truck tour around the city and diski dancers entertained the crowd at Clive Solomon Stadium in Bloemfontein.

According to George Mohlakoane, CEO of Mangaung 2010, the city is ready for the tournament.

Zuma marks 30 days countdown in style

Pretoria- President Jacob Zuma marked one month before the 2010 Soccer World Cup kick- off by flying South African Airways on Tuesday ahead of his Budget Vote in Parliament tomorrow.

Today's flight was also aimed at boosting confidence in the national carrier which will soon carry thousands of tourists and soccer fans to South Africa and around the country during the Soccer World Cup the Presidency said.

It is also a celebration of the improved facilities at key airports around the country, it said.

Passengers told Zuma that they are confident that transport arrangements during the World Cup would be adequate adding that they were satisfied and delighted with the refurbished airports and other infrastructure.

SA ready, excited to host World Cup

Pretoria - With less than 50 days to go to before the kick-off of the biggest soccer spectacle, Cabinet says the recent ticket frenzy was an indication that the country is ready and excited to host the World Cup.The good World Cup betting is that everything is going to be ready to go for kick off on June 11.

Last week, there were scenes of excitement, anger and frustration as fans rushed to ticketing centres countrywide to get their hands on the tickets.

Briefing the media on Thursday following an ordinary Cabinet meeting, government spokesperson Themba Maseko said over the next few weeks, billboards will be set up and the flighting of adverts on various radio and TV stations will raise awareness to get South Africans more excited about the World Cup.

Soccer fever grips Kimberly

Kimberley - The small township of Galeshewe is abuzz with activity this morning as the country marks the 50 days countdown to the kick-off of the FIFA World Cup.

Colourful South African flags and vuvuzelas can be seen all over the local stadium which is packed with scores of people who have converged to celebrate the event. Locals are being entertained with music being strummed out by the South African police band and members of the national defence force.

While none of the games will be played in the Northern Cape during the World Cup, some have questioned the organising committee's decision to hold today's celebrations in the province.

But Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, said the Northern Cape was one of the provinces where people have shown a huge interest in the world cup despite the province not hosting any games. The chances of getting a ticket have been compared to winning a slots online jackpot, but they are far better than that.
